Cedars Cancer Centre Volunteer Opportunities

Please see the message below from the Cedars Cancer Centre highlighting three volunteering opportunities for Grade 10, 11, and 12 students this fall. If you are interested in volunteering at any of these events, please contact Alyssa Bray, Cedars Cancer Centre’s volunteer coordinator.

The Cedars Cancer Centre’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of pediatric, young adult and adult cancer patients, and their families, throughout and beyond treatment, by leading philanthropic initiatives that support excellence and innovations in clinical care, research, education, and supportive care services.

In the coming months, we are hosting three events for which we are seeking volunteers. We are specifically requesting the participation of Grade 10, 11, or 12 students for this volunteering opportunity, as the nature of the tasks involved calls for a level of maturity and responsibility.

Our 18th Annual BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race event is a team-based boat race that will take place at the scenic Promenade Père-Marquette in Lachine on Saturday, September 9th. This event is the primary fundraiser for Cedars CanSupport, a vital program at the Cedars Cancer Centre providing free psychological, emotional, practical, and financial support to cancer patients. Each year, over 125 volunteers come together and commit their time to make the BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race a success. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas on site as well as leading up to the event.

Here are a few examples of the required volunteer positions:
  • Team Ambassador: Helping the dragon boat teams get to races on time, acting as liaison between the teams and race & festival coordinators
  • Kid Zone: Supervise (not babysit) the Kid Zone, help collect entrance fees and ensure the area is clean and safe
  • Site Operations: Various tasks throughout the day to ensure a smooth event
  • Pre-Event Setup Crew: Come help the Cedars event staff on Friday, September 8th to set up the Dragon Boat Race
  • Post-Event Take Down Crew
  • Information Crew and Visitor Greeters
  • Food Services: Help ensure that all of our paddlers are fed throughout the day by assisting in the preparation and distribution of bagels, coffee and lunches
Approximate timing: from 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, depending on the volunteer task.

Splash & Dash 2.0 is back! Following the success of last year, Splash & Dash will once again take place outdoors in the beautiful Danyluk Park in Town of Mount-Royal on Sunday, October 1st, 2023. Join us for this Family FUN Day in honour of the heroes on Sarah’s Floor.
Splash & Dash is the signature event for Sarah’s Fund for Cedars that raises critical funds for the needs of young cancer patients who are hospitalized on Sarah’s Floor. Already $4 million has been raised through Splash & Dash — a special event where the heroes on Sarah’s Floor, corporations, students, friends & family members take part in family friendly activities such as walking, bicycling, running, and swimming for this important cause.

Volunteers are an integral part of this event and as such, we are asking you to volunteer with us to ensure the continued success of this event.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas, some of which include:
  • Registration & Information: Help us to check in all participants and provide them with necessary items and information
  • Inner Track Activities: Varied activities occurring within the inner track
  • Race Logistics: Managing various aspects of the races/activities
  • Pre-Event Setup & Post-Event Takedown
Splash & Dash would not be possible without our team of dedicated volunteers! We hope you will join our team for this FUN filled event!

Approximate timing: from 9 AM – 2 PM, depending on the volunteer task.
Pre-Event Setup: Saturday, September 30th, from 8 AM – 12 PM
Event Day Setup & Takedown: Sunday, October 1st, from 8 AM – 3 PM

Our 8th Annual Cedars Run for Ovarian Cancer event is a 2km, 5km and 10km run/walk on Sunday, October 15th. This event raises awareness and funds for the DOvEEgene Project, under the leadership of Dr. Lucy Gilbert at the McGill University Health Centre. The DOvEEgene test provides a safe and minimally invasive method for earlier diagnosis of ovarian and endometrial cancers while being the only test to distinguish cancerous versus non-cancerous cells in pre- and post-menopausal women. To achieve a seamless event, we rely on the help of volunteers.

Here are some examples of some of the volunteer positions needed:
  • Food and Drink Stations: Help keep our runners full of energy by becoming a food station volunteer
  • Cheer: Help to cheer on the runners along the route
  • Registration & Information: Help us to check in all participants and provide them with necessary items and information
  • Set-Up and Take-Down: Help us to set-up the event space and take it down at the end of the day
Approximate timing: Sunday, October 15th from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, depending on the volunteer task.
