Attending First Nations hockey school

In late March, Selwyn House Grade 11 student Conor Waldron travelled with his father, David, to attend hockey school in an Indigenous community in Northern Ontario.

“It’s a happy coincidence that Conor had this opportunity to help at a hockey camp with these First Nations kids on the very week that Selwyn launched its Indigenization program,” David points out. “It was very enriching for him to meet and play with the members of the community, and I saw the kids on the ice (grades 1 to 12) were having a lot of fun during the training.”

In the photo, Conor (at left) is proudly showing the Selwyn colours with the other two instructors at the camp, Ric Nattress, former Hab and 1998 Stanley Cup winner and Rick Vaive, a former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Also in the picture are Chief Bruce Archibald of the Taykwa Tagamou Nation (in the centre), and the two at the end are Councillor Derek Archibald, also from TTN and Councillor Steve Tooshkenig of the Bkejwanong First Nation.
