Rowers narrowly miss medal at Head of the Fish Regatta

Selwyn House rowers narrowly missed a medal at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, New York on Oct 27.

In their second regatta of the season, Gryphon rowers from Grades 8-11 competed in three events, all on the 3.68-km course.

In the U-15 age group, the SHS coxed quad (where four rowers using double oars are steered by a fifth crew member, the coxswain) completed the course with a time of 15m:04s, placing fifth in a field of 13, thus missing a medal by only 30 seconds and beating their last year’s time by over three minutes.

In the Junior class, the SHS coxed four (where four rowers use single oars and are guided by a coxswain) registered a time of 16m:50s, handily beating their last year's time of 20m:34s.

The Selwyn House U-17 Juniors Eight (eight rowers using single oars, plus a coxswain) put in a time of 15m:38s.

Weather conditions made the whole day a challenge for everyone. “It was pouring rain and freezing cold,” says coach Christine Morris. “The guys were soaked, and some competed in back-to-back events without time to properly change or dry off. But they poured their hearts into it, and we couldn't be more proud.”

Held each year at Fish Creek on the last weekend of October, Head of the Fish is one of the largest regattas in the U.S. The Head of the Fish attracts over 160 teams and 1600 crews from across the northeast.
