Coronavirus Update - March 11

Dear Faculty and Parents:

This has certainly been an eventful, different and, for many, a difficult March break. Following up on information that was included with the school mailbags, I want to inform you that if required, I will be sending another full communication to everyone on Monday, March 16 with complete up-to-date information on Coronavirus/Covid-19 and any new developments at Selwyn House. We are monitoring the situation carefully and diligently on an hour-by-hour basis.

Susan and I are currently travelling in Paris and the United Kingdom. We met our midget rugby team today in Paris, and we have Old Boy reunions scheduled for here tonight and Thursday in London. We also have one group of students travelling in Peru. All of these trips have been hugely successful, and we anticipate no follow-up issues.

This Coronavirus has had implications worldwide, and I know many of you have been impacted directly. The economic consequences are far reaching, and inconvenience is unavoidable but, at the forefront, the health, safety, and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and all of you remains our most important priority. As a result, the following bits of information are important and need to be read carefully:

1) If you, your son, or any family member has visited China, Italy, Iran, Japan, South Korea, or any other country at level 2 or higher on the Government of Canada Travel advisory list, we require you to keep your son home (self-quarantine) for 14 days upon arrival in Montreal. It would be helpful to contact Info- Santé at Tel. # 811 for further information recommended quarantine measures.

2) Rest assured that Selwyn House will accommodate any student who needs to be away from school. Your son’s learning need not be comprised. Arrangements will be made to accommodate any student not able to participate in any athletic try-out, or any co-curricular activity. This will not be an issue.

3) We will monitor all travel advisory reports closely for upcoming planned school trips to the United States, and will advise parents of any changes.

At home, I hope you will discuss the Coronavirus openly and honestly. This should be done at an age-appropriate level. Please refer to reputable sources of information such as Health Canada, the Governments of Quebec and Canada websites, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US. Personal hygiene and other precautions should be talked about on a regular basis. We will do the same at school in the weeks ahead.

Thank you for paying close attention to this message. Again, the safety of our community is our highest priority, and your support in this regard is appreciated. Please let me know directly if you have any issues or concerns.

Warm wishes,

Hal Hannaford
