Big brothers teach AP Calculus

On Friday, May 29, Old Boys Harry 2010, Josh 2012 and Theo 2015 Cape, older brothers of current graduate Isaac 2020, introduced the SIR Model of the Spread of Disease to the students in Samara Sayegh’s Advanced Placement Calculus class.

“Using the differential equations and related rates we studied over the course of the year, our students were able to understand the current Coronavirus pandemic more deeply by using a strictly mathematical point of view,” says Ms. Sayegh. “Harry, Josh and Theo delivered an engaging lecture while providing adequate time to then split up into smaller breakout sessions, each of which was facilitated by a different brother.”

On Friday, June 5, Old Boys Jamie 2014 and Matthew 2016 Denham, older brothers of current graduate Christopher 2020, taught the AP Calculus students all about the complex algorithm involved in calculating the determinant of a 3X3 matrix, a skill Jamie Denham describes as "the bread and butter" of linear algebra.

“Using a meticulously put-together presentation, peppered with loving pictures of their little brother, our students were able to further their knowledge base in a topic they will not cover until their last term of CEGEP,” Ms. Sayegh adds. “Again, our students had the opportunity to conclude the Zoom session with the opportunity to break out into smaller groups.”

“The time and effort these five Old Boys were willing to put in for their school, our current graduates and especially for their beloved youngest brother, speaks volumes to their commitment to, and love for, Selwyn House and its community.”
