MS students win Write for Justice
An essay about the Black Lives Matter movement has won the Write for Justice competition for Selwyn House for the third year in a row.
Grade 8 student Julian Harroch won first place in the Secondary Cycle 1 category for the piece he wrote about last year’s death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Entitled “I Can’t Breathe!” the essay drew parallels between the death of Floyd and Julian’s own feelings of panic when he lost his asthma puffer.
“George, we’re all the same in some ways, but I don’t pretend to know the demons that some people live with,” Julian wrote. “You can walk a mile in somebody’s shoes, but those shoes still belong to them. I recognize that I will never understand exactly what you went through, that I will never face struggles and obstacles in life because of my skin colour. But I stand with you.”
Selwyn House Grade 8 students Owen Kugler, Jake Benchetrit-Morrison, Richard Li and Nathan Twik received honourable mentions, as did Grade 7 student Jerry Han.
This is the 34th year of the Write for Justice competition, which is organized by the Bar of Montreal to encourage students on the Island of Montreal to write essays on a legal theme.
