SHS student commissioned to write poem for COVID victims

On March 11, Selwyn House Grade 11 student Dylan Lee read an original poem on video as a part of the City of Westmount’s tribute to the victims of COVID-19.

March 11 was declared a national day of remembrance for victims of the pandemic. At 1 p.m., the entire population of Québec was asked to observe a minute of silence, with flags flying at half-mast.

“Everyone around the world has been affected in some way by this unforgiving pandemic,” read a statement from the City of Westmount. “Today is an opportunity for us to take time to remember and honour the family members, colleagues, friends, and neighbours that have been taken away from us.”

Dylan was contacted by Westmount Librarian Wendy Wayling and asked to write and recite a commemorative poem for the event.

“I presume I was asked because I had won the McEntyre Essay Writing Competition multiple times over the last seven years,” Dylan says. “It was written over the first week of March Break, and the video was filmed on March 9.”
