MS students excel at Science Fair

Selwyn House Middle School students excelled at this year’s Montreal Regional Science and Technology Fair (Expo-sciences). At the March 30 awards ceremony, Grade 7 student Édward Kovac won first place in the Junior (Grade 7-8) category, while Grade 8 students William Birks and Nicolas Capolicchio received Highest Distinction and Great Distinction honours, respectively.

Édward also won the $100 Ted Rogers Award for innovation, and won a copy of the Antidote software. He will go on to represent Montréal in the Junior Category at the Quebec Provincial Science Fair in April.

Édward’s project on building cheaper hearing aids was inspired by his grandmother.  “My grandmother has hearing problems,” Édward explains, “and she always complains that her hearing aids are so expensive. So, I decided to try and make ones. I bought a 3-D printer and started creating the tube and the box for a hearing aid. I bought the electronics and started working on it.”

William Birks (Grade 8) won Highest Distinction Award for his project “Which Lace wins the Race?” He also won awards from the Physics Department, Mining Engineering Department and Mechanical Engineering Department of McGill University, as well as winning an award from the ASM Materials Education Foundation, and took home the Super expo-sciences Experimentation and Design Award.

The project of Nicolas Capolicchio (also Grade 8) was entitled “To Kill or Not to Kill.” In addition to the Great Distinction Award, he won the McGill Biology Award, the McGill Redpath Museum Award and the Super expo-sciences Hydro Quebec Experimentation and Design Award, Alternate.
