Kovac second at regionals, advances to nationals
Selwyn House Grade 7 student Édward Kovac won second place in the junior category of the Super-Expo-Sciences Hydro-Quebec on April 25, and will go on to represent Quebec in The Canada-Wide Science Fair in May.
In addition to the $500 prize for second place, Édward will receive a $2000 bursary if he chooses to study at Sherbrooke University

Édward’s project on building cheaper hearing aids was inspired by his grandmother. “My grandmother has hearing problems,” Édward explains, “and she always complains that her hearing aids are so expensive. So, I decided to try and make one. I bought a 3-D printer and started creating the tube and the box for a hearing aid. I bought the electronics and started working on it.”
The Canada-Wide Science Fair, scheduled for May 17-21, is the country’s largest annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) event, bringing together top young scientists and their projects, selected by a national network of over 100 regional STEM fairs in every province and territory.
