Steve Mitchell hangs up his skates

Steve Mitchell, who retired as Selwyn House Director of Athletics in 2011, has now retired once again, this time winding up his side career as a hockey teacher.

Steve started teaching 48 years ago at the Howie Meeker schools, later founding his own Mitchell Hockey School in Greenfield Park, with his son Josh (Selwyn House Class of 2000) as partner.

Steve feels comfortable about leaving the family school in Josh’s hands. “He is an absolute pro and can deliver a lesson or practice that is first-class and exceptional,” says Steve. “Students respect his knowledge, passion and leadership. He makes every aspect of his lessons fun but challenging.

“The Hockey School is in great hands for years to come,” said Steve, just before he left for a fishing trip in northern Quebec. “Josh was only one year old when I started the hockey school. He started as a student in 1989, then became a counsellor in 1996 then an instructor in 2001 and a director in 2016.”

I stepped aside from the main school in 2016 and helped Josh for five years with the bantam-age camp until last week, when I decided to step aside completely.”

Montreal Gazette sportswriter Stu Cowan congratulated Steve for reaching this milestone. “As the saying goes: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” wrote Mr. Cowan. “Great to see the hockey school continuing with the Mitchell name.”

Steve’s other son, Torrey (SHS 2002) has also carried the family name high in hockey, having spent 12 years playing professional hockey, including four seasons with the Montreal Canadiens.
