Federal election candidates visit Selwyn House

Just a few days before the federal election, five local candidates were invited to speak to the Senior School students about their background and their party’s platform, and to answer students’ questions.

Jordan Craig Larouche (Bloc Québécois), Emma Elbourne-Weinstock (New Democratic Party), Sam Fairbrother (Green Party), Marc Garneau (Liberal Party) and Mathew Kaminski (Conservative Party) took a break from the final stretch of the campaign trail to visit Selwyn House.

The questions from the students were wide-ranging, from COVID-19 vaccines to childcare and party identities.

Notable moments included:

  • Mr. Larouche answering a student’s question about his party’s raison d’être in the local riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce--Westmount;
  • Ms. Elbourne-Weinstock stressing the importance of examining the voting records of candidates;
  • Mr. Fairbrother highlighting emerging technologies in green energy;
  • Mr. Garneau detailing his party’s childcare program;
  • Mr. Kaminski explaining the changes in his party over the past several years.

On Election Day, Monday, September 20, Senior School students participated in a mock election, with each participating student receiving one point for their house. Macaulay House won the vote.
