Grade 5 students become zookeepers for a day

This week, Grade 5 students immersed themselves in several experiences connected to their class novel, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

They visited the Ecomuseum Zoo, where they got to experience what it would be like to be a ‘’zookeeper for the day’’. They were able to get up close and personal with several animals and created enrichment treats to give to the wolves and red foxes.

The students also participated in a special Zoom call with a biologist from the Granby Zoo, who gave them a behind the scenes look at how the zoo provides animal welfare through enrichment, healthcare and training.

Overall, both activities helped enrich the students' understanding of animal well-being and helped them connect more deeply to the class novel.
