First tournament since pandemic for rugby players

On Friday, May 6, 2022, all three levels of Selwyn House Rugby participated in the GMAA 7s tournament for the first time in 2 years.  At the Bantam and Midget levels, almost every player was new to the sport.

The Grade 7 Bantam team played a team that included Royal West and Loyola players in an extended exhibition match. The game was an incredible learning opportunity for all the boys to play rugby for the first time. The young Gryphons showed a lot of promise, athleticism, and smiles during the game.

The Grade 8 and 9 Midget boys competed in the 10-team, 7s tournament. Despite the team having only 8 players, the Gryphons showed incredible resilience, determination, and teamwork, winning 2 of 3 matches in round robin play to secure a spot in the semi-finals. "I was extremely proud of this young group of athletes,’’ said Coach Matthew Held. ‘‘They persevered and displayed incredible courage throughout the entire day. "

The Juvenile team put on an excellent display of 7s rugby winning their first 3 games. The team fell to a well organized Stanstead team in the semi-finals. ‘‘The game could very well have been a final in terms of the quality of rugby both teams displayed,’’ said Coach Stephanie Lynam.
