Old Boys and Friends’ Golf Tournament returns with a bang

One hundred forty-one golfers and 12 dinner guests joined for a spectacular day weather-wise and community-wise at the 24th Annual Old Boys & Friends’ Golf Tournament at Kanawaki Golf Course raising over $60,000 for the Old Boys’ Endowment Fund, the Rob Wearing Bursary Fund and the Old Boys’ Speaker Series.

Guests arrived to a welcome like never before with baked goods courtesy of the Parent Volunteer Association, new contests and activities (The Gryphon Ball, the Golden Putter, pre-game Golfer Yoga with parent Kim Snabl), and an information table on Selwyn’s latest initiatives: The Indigenization Process, The Rob Wearing Bursary Fund, and The Path Forward Campaign.

The day began with welcome messages from Headmaster Michael Downey and Wáhiakatste (Wahi) Diome-Deer (Selwyn’s consultant on the school's Indigenization Process). SHA Board Chair Mike Avedesian ’88 then introduced the new Celebratory Tee-Off featuring golf tournament co-founder Will Daly '52, Selwyn’s 7th Headmaster Will Mitchell, and Selwyn’s 9th and current Headmaster, Mike Downey. Players then headed out in their carts with Selwyn hats and giveaways to start their round in the new Best Ball format.

At the evening cocktail and dinner, tournament awards were distributed by the 2022 Golf Committee, which includes Old Boys’ Association President Josh Wishenthal ’99, Marty Boyle, EJ Boffey ’12, Mary Ann Cloherty, Sharon Cozens, Will Daly ’52, Geoff Dowd, Mike Downey, Justin Kuzmicki ’05, Mike Maurovich, Pat Shannon, Ben Wearing ’94, and Esther Wearing (absent: Dave Haber ’94, Charles Vennat ’05 and Sean McKinnon ’98). While there were no winners of the Hole in One contests, Arjun Srivastava ’19 was awarded a prize for his errant shot at the 18th hitting the Class of 2021 Bursary Art displayed on the club verandah.
