Respect and Reciprocity – an Indigenous Opening to the 22-23 School Year

Selwyn House staff were welcomed to the Diome-Deer family homestead in Kahnawake as part of the return-to-school week. Building on the momentum created by our commitment to the Indigenization Process, staff spent time outside connecting with each other while learning from local Kanien'kéha knowledge keepers. Led by Wáhiakatste Diome-Deer, the staff set intentions for the coming year and immersed themselves in place-based teachings about the community of Kahnawake. Traditional food was prepared by Ryland ‘06. Both Raianeràhstha ’18 and Thiréhtha ’21 joined the morning workshop and reconnected with teachers. Mrs. Diome and Mr. Deer were generous hosts who opened their home and hearts for our learning and growth.
