Remembrance Day assemblies

Senior and Middle School commemorated Remembrance Day at a touching assembly the morning of November 11. Two Canadian Forces’ veterans came to speak to the students about what Remembrance Day means to them. During the assembly, the students were fortunate to witness Major General (Ret’d) Denis Thompson honour Captain (Ret’d) Ryan Carey with the Medal of Sacrifice for his service in Afghanistan 15 years ago. He spoke to the students about his own sacrifice and the realities of war, reminding them that mental resilience was important on and off the battlefield because we all have our own challenges to face.

The Elementary School gathered in Coristine Hall for Remembrance day on November 11. The grade 6 led the assembly with a flag processional and presentations on conscription, the story of Peter G Holt, an SHS soldier, and the origins of the poppy and its connection to the Flanders Fields Poem. Grade 2B recited a class-created poem, grade 4 recited the poem Flanders Fields and grade 1 shared their ideas about the sounds of peace. Grade 5 remembered the SHS soldiers who served in previous wars and Mrs Funamoto read the Haudenosaunee story, The Tree of Peace.

Thank you to all the students, faculty and staff who played a role in the school's moving tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country.
