Rhodes Scholar Sniderman '01 launches book

Andrew Sniderman '01 and Douglas Sanderson, co-authors of Valley of the Birdtail, launched their book in Montreal at Librairie Paragraphe Bookstore on November 13, 2022 to a room full of family, friends and Selwyn community members.

Inspired ten years ago by a talk given by Marie Wilson (journalist and later a commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada), Andrew travelled to the northwest of Canada to write a story for Maclean's magazine. He needed to make sense of what was happening on reserves–the racism, discrimination and lack of funding for schools. This book is the product of his follow-up trips where he witnessed inequity between two small towns. As the book jacket reads, "Their story reflects much of what has gone wrong in relations between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. It also offers, in the end, an uncommon measure of hope."

Andrew thanked his parents and his Selwyn House School teachers (some of whom were present) for the education he received. Selwyn supporters included: Class of 1972 Jonathan Goldbloom; Class of 1996 Robert Sniderman; Class of 2000 Jonathan Brun and son Raphael, Conrad Harrington, Ed Morin and partner Jacinthe; Class of 2001 Chris Nacos; Class of 2002 Keith Martin, Luke Reid; Alumni Parents Dr. Sarah Prichard, Dr. Allan Sniderman, Gwen Nacos, Alice Goldbloom; Former Staff: Tom Nicoll, Kathi Biggs; Current Staff: Sharon Cozens, Mike Downey, Courtney Prieur; SHS Friends Émilie Bergeron, John Biggs, Jackie Cozens; and others.
