SHS Hosts Canadian National British Parliamentary Championships

Selwyn House School hosted the 2022-23 Canadian National British Parliamentary Debating Tournament. This was the first national level high school tournament to be held in-person since 2019. This event crowns the BP Champions and also serves as a qualifier for various British competitions such as the Oxford Cup, the Cambridge Schools Tournament, and the International Competition for Young Debaters. Sixty-four teams from all around Canada arrived at Selwyn House on November 18 and debated throughout the weekend. After six universal rounds, and two elimination rounds, we were proud to announce our winners: Alinna Liu and Anna Feng from Appleby College (Oakville, Ontario) in the U15 category, and Rob Burket and Stu Boyden from The York School (Toronto, Ontario) in the Senior Category. – Mr. Bracewell, Debate Coach

Selwyn House School would like to thank our Selwyn debaters: Jacob Bukhman and Joseph Brydges, who both came in 10th place; and Michael Xu, Alex Qin, Edward Kovac and Shen Hudon for their participation in the event. Thanks also to students Charles Seitz, Ken Gu, Yusuf Afif, Ziye Zhou and Augusto Liberatore for volunteering their time this weekend and to all of our staff and volunteers who made this weekend possible for so many debaters. Your contribution and dedication are appreciated. Special thanks to SHS staff members Debate Coach and lead organizer Mr. Bracewell and Assistant Debate Coach Mr. Elbling for putting this event together, and to Kirk Brydges who made the wooden plaque in the school's workshop.
