Student-led Chinese New Year Assembly

Everyone at Selwyn House School is in a celebratory mood thanks to the school-wide festivities of the Lunar New Year.

For Chinese New Year, a team of students organized a Middle and Senior School assembly to share their families' new year traditions and various activities that are done throughout the 15-day celebration. On January 25, prefect Yikai (Ken) Zhao welcomed everyone to this year's assembly. Students and staff heard from senior students Alex Qin and Zhaoxuan (Michael) Xu about the Legend of Nian, where the tradition of the Lunar New Year all began. Senior students from the Calculus class also presented a famous Chinese poem, "New Year's Day."

Lunar New Year celebrations at Selwyn House School started three years ago thanks to Ray Qiu '22 and several other Chinese students who introduced the holiday to the school. Ray Qiu '22 could not attend the event for the first time since its inception but still took the time to record a video and show his love for Lunar New Year and Selwyn House. Jacky Sun shared popular traditional foods that Chinese people eat during the holiday and the meaning behind each one. Eric (Xianduo) Zhang spoke to the school about the symbolism of fireworks and firecrackers kickstarting the holiday to ward off evil and to bring good luck. Tony (Dongqu) Liu explained the traditional Lunar greeting between children and relatives with Yanting (Roger) Pan and Yikai (Ken) giving a live demonstration. Lawrie brought attention to all the Lunar New Year decorations around the school courtesy of parents who wished to bring good luck to the school. Yikai (Ken) concluded the assembly with a raffle for senior students and staff. The year of the Rabbit started on a great note thanks to our parent volunteers, Senior students, and Old Boy Ray Qiu '22.
