New England Athletic Trip

From January 12–14, Midget D3 and Juvenile D3 Basketball teams and Bantam D1 and Juvenile D1 Hockey teams travelled to New Hampshire and Massachusetts to participate in a series of games against New England prep schools. These games were an excellent opportunity to help develop the teams and showcase our athletes to these schools. The Juvenile Basketball and Hockey teams travelled to Phillips Exeter Academy on their first day, where the Juvenile Hockey team defended the Shannon Cup with an overtime win. The Shannon Cup was established in 2017 to bridge the connection between our two great schools and our alumni. Meanwhile, the Bantam Hockey and Midget Basketball teams travelled to Eaglebrook School to compete against their own teams. On the second day, all four teams travelled to Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market in downtown Boston for shopping and sightseeing. After lunch, all teams went to Thayer Academy for a couple of games. That evening, our Selwyn House group cheered on the Harvard University Crimson men's ice hockey team that won 4-1 against Clarkson University. We even got a shout-out in the arena and were featured on the Jumbotron. On our final day, all the teams travelled to Belmont Hill School for more games with a total of 15 games in three days. The students were amazing and here is what some of the coaches and a student had to say about the trip:

"We've been doing this trip for years. We play against well-tuned American teams and get to spend three full days together as a unit. It spurs team chemistry, gels us as teammates and tends to be a turning point in the season when we ramp up intensity and refine our focus on our goals." –Kevin Boyle, Midget D3 Basketball Coach

"It is always great to have a road trip after a long break to get some of the rust off.  It really helped our group prepare for the second half of our season. It was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to see some prep schools and NCAA D1 hockey." –Chris LaPerle, Director of Hockey, Juvenile D1 Hockey Coach

"The trip to prep schools in the Boston area was a great opportunity for our students to play against a high level of competition and to bond as a team." –Jon Merritt, Juvenile D3 Basketball Coach

"Representing Selwyn and having the opportunity to travel to the US to play competitive hockey with my teammates was a great experience. I’m already looking forward to it next year. Thank you." - Aaron Beckerleg, Grade 9 student, Bantam D1 Hockey
