“Footsteps United” Inaugural Basketball Tournament

On March 4, 2023, Old Boys Antoine Duong ’12 and Dan Ton-That ’12 hosted an inaugural basketball tournament at Selwyn for their not-for-profit organization, Footsteps United.

Montreal-based Footsteps United was founded in 2021 with the goal of promoting equal access and removing barriers to academic, athletic and career opportunities among underrepresented and underprivileged communities. While the current focus is on bettering the representation of Asian Canadian youth in sports, the organization’s long-term and ultimate goal is to impact all underrepresented and underprivileged communities in Montreal and Canada as a whole.

With the help of its dedicated volunteer base, Footsteps United aims to accomplish its objectives by (1) establishing mentorship networks, (2) providing scholarship funds to Montreal students and athletes, and (3) most notably, hosting its annual sports tournaments, where they collect funds for their various initiatives, athletic gear for youth teams in need, as well as raise awareness for their cause. In July 2022, they successfully held their inaugural soccer tournament which saw twelve teams compete with over 150 players and volunteers participating.

The March 4th basketball tournament, played in the Speirs and Macaulay gyms, was met with similar success. Twelve teams consisting of over 100 players spanning from all over Montreal (and even Ontario) participated in a full day of competitive basketball. Prizes were given to the tournament’s top scorer, rebounder and 3-point contest winner, and photographers were on-site to capture every moment. At the end of the day, a trophy was handed out to the championship winning team hailing from St-Bruno!

A total of sixteen past and current Selwyn students participated in the tournament as players or volunteers. Of note, George Perlman ’13 captained a team (named the Selwyn House Griffins) consisting of several alumni and even managed to lead them to the event’s playoffs.

Antoine and Dan want to highlight how immensely helpful Selwyn House School has been throughout the planning and execution of the tournament, from helping gather all the equipment needed, to providing access to their gyms and facilities and even preparing and installing all audio and scorekeeping systems in advance. They wish to thank Headmaster Mike Downey, Courtney Prieur, Sharon Cozens, Peter Govan, Matt McCarney, Marty Boyle, April Wong, Michelle Segal and Olivier Séguin-Leduc. The boys want to especially thank Mike Maurovich who tirelessly worked closely with the organization to make their first basketball tournament a true success.

After several weeks of organizing, Footsteps United is already looking forward to hosting its second soccer tournament this upcoming summer and is hoping and eager to see the same level of participation and enthusiasm.
