Outstanding math achievements by Senior School students

Selwyn House School proudly announces our students' exceptional performances in various Mathematics competitions.

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge, organized by the Canadian Mathematical Society, a feeder organization for the World Mathematics Olympics, had nine students involved this year. The top three scorers from the school were Lawrie Feng (Grade 11) in third place, Ziye Zhou (Grade 9) in second place, and Yikai (Ken) Zhao (Grade 11) as the top scorer.

The Canadian Intermediate Contest, put forth by the University of Waterloo, was completed by sixteen members of Mr. Brydges' Grade 10 accelerated math class and one Grade 9 student. The top three scorers from the school were Ian Yoon (Grade 10) in third place, How Kang (Jerry) Chaw (Grade 10) in second place, and Ziye Zhou (Grade 9) as the top scorer.

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing contests, put forth by the University of Waterloo, were completed by 29 students. For the first time since 1998, Selwyn House ranked 1st in our zone and 6th in Quebec in the Pascal contest, with four of our students scoring in the top 25% in Canada. Congratulations to our outstanding top scorers, Grade 9 students: Thomas Xue and Jerry Han, who tied for first place, and Frazer Dunn; and Shen Hudon, Can Gu, and Ziye Zhou for scoring in the top 25%. In the Cayley contest, our team ranked 9th in Quebec. How Kang Chaw, our school’s top scorer and #8 out of over 1,000 students, earned a personal invitation to the mathematics summer camp at the University of Ottawa in collaboration with the Canadian Mathematical Society. Grade 10 students Oscar Tsang, Zhaoxuan (Michael) Xu), Ian Yoon and Zijun (Leon) Zhang scored among the top 25% in Canada.

Finally, in the Fermat contest, our school's top scorer Yikai (Ken) Zhao ranked among the top 6 students out of the 958 who wrote it in Quebec.

We are proud of all our students for their hard work and dedication, which has led to these exceptional achievements scoring in the top 25% in all the tournaments. Congratulations to all our participants–you continue to make Selwyn House School proud!
