National Debate Championship in Calgary!

The Senior National Debate Championship recently took place in Calgary, bringing together the finest debate teams from across Canada. This prestigious competition showcased the intellectual prowess and eloquence of young debaters who had earned their spots through rigorous provincial tournaments.

This year, a total of 44 teams engaged in intense debates, with each team participating in six rounds. The first two rounds focused on motions that were shared weeks in advance, giving students ample time to prepare their arguments. The remaining four rounds, however, presented impromptu topics, providing a thrilling challenge as teams had just 30 minutes to gather their thoughts and deliver persuasive speeches.

Representing Quebec were five impressive teams, including the talented duo of Grade 11 students Yusuf Afif and Charles Seitz from Selwyn House. Our boys exhibited commendable skills and dedication throughout the tournament, culminating in a final score of 2 wins and 4 losses. Here is what the boys had to say about their experience:

"Super fun trip. Lots of new, exciting experiences. We met a few really amazing people and had a great time. Even though we didn't come back with a win, the trip still gave us a few things to be proud of." - Charles Seitz

"This trip was an amazing experience. Although we didn't perform as well as we wanted to, we had fun meeting new people and creating new memories. It was a great way to end our debating career at Selwyn House."  - Yusuf Afif
