25 Years of Golf and Friendship!

In 1999, a golf day at The Hemmingford Golf Club was organized by William Daly '52 and others for Selwyn friends. Since then, 1,863 players have participated and $1,803,965 has been raised for Selwyn House School. After all these years, the Old Boys & Friends’ Golf Tournament continues to draw a crowd to support students and initiatives at the school.

On May 29, 148 golfers and guests came out for the 25th edition of our tournament at Kanawaki Golf
Club. They, along with our generous sponsors, raised over $62,000 for the Old Boys’ Endowment Fund, the Old Boys’ Trip Fund and the Old Boys' Speaker Series.

Golfers were treated to baked goods, courtesy of the Parent Volunteer Association, and early morning popcorn and barbecued ribs (why not?), before heading to the driving range.

Headmaster Michael Downey, SHA Board Chair Mike Avedesian ’88, OBA President Josh Wisenthal '99 and Golf Committee Chair EJ Boffey '12 welcomed everyone at the first tee then proceeded with the Celebratory Tee-Off featuring golf tournament co-founder Will Daly '52, Selwyn’s 8th headmaster Hal Hannaford, and Selwyn’s 9th and current headmaster, Mike Downey. The weather made for a perfect golf day only adding to the enjoyment.

It was wonderful to welcome back retired staff: Headmasters Will Mitchell and Hal Hannaford; Geoff Dowd, Shawn O’Donnell (soon to retire), and Carol Manning and Minna Shulman who made a trio with soon-to-be-retired Kathy Funamoto.

At the evening cocktail and dinner, tournament awards were distributed by the 2023 Golf Committee, including Golf Committee Chair EJ Boffey '12, OBA President Josh Wisenthal ’99, Marty Boyle, Mary Ann Cloherty, Sharon Cozens, Will Daly ’52, Geoff Dowd, Mike Downey, Vittorio Guzzo '17, Justin Kuzmicki ’05, Mike Maurovich, parent James Robinson, and Ben Wearing ’94, Brad White '94 (absent: Charles Vennat ’05 and Sean McKinnon ’98).

There were several special hole-in-one opportunities honouring the 25th anniversary but no one was able to take home the $250K and $25K grand prizes, although David Giroux ’17’s ball rolled over the hole just missing $25K. Golfers enjoyed the Beat the Pro challenge, hoping to do so against SHS Golf Team members Ollie Robinson (Grade 9) and Bobby Avedesian (Grade 10). Only a handful were victorious.

The winning Old Boy foursome of David Giroux '17, Joshua Naimer '17, Nicolas Little '17 and Noah Kader '17, with a score of 62, were awarded The Tim Shorter ‘81 Down Under Trophy. Old Boy MVP Noah Kader ‘17 was presented with the William Daly '52 Cup by the man himself, and looked sharp in the coveted Yellow Jacket. Guest MVP was current parent Bobby Piazza whose Plaid Jacket fit to a tee. Other contest winners were: Closest to the Pin: Jonathan Aune ‘92, Longest Drive: Jeffrey Lee ‘10, Golden Putter: Robert Macri – Current Parent, Hole-in-One Shootout (closest to pin): Tommy Gearey - Guest, Beat the Pro Draw: Al Vahn - Guest, Best-dressed foursome: Alumni parent Arun Srivastava and guests Umesh Patel, Dany Medeiros and Nelson Taveras

The evening ended with the first-ever online silent auction, a fun live auction with EJ Boffey '12 auctioneer helping bidders to determine who would go see a practice round at The Master's, play at Cabot Citrus Farms, or be Old Boy Headmaster for the Day (have fun Headmaster Mosen Aziz '03!).

Thank you to everyone for a terrific day.
