Tournament of Champions of the World Scholar's Cup

Grade seven students Theo Simons and Henri Stack-Lévesque, along with teammate Sophie Birks from ECS, participated in the Tournament of Champions of the World Scholar's Cup at Yale this week (Nov. 8-12). The World Scholar's Cup is an international team academic program with students participating from over 82 countries. The program's aim is to attract students interested in learning beyond typical school curricula, and to bring together students from different cultures to discuss issues and ideas relevant to today. This year's theme, "A World on the Margins", had the scholars examining topics such as unsolved mysteries, neglected histories, enabling technologies, and voices from the margins in six different subject areas: Music and Art, Literature, Science, History, Social Science, and Special Area, as well as writing collaboratively and debating

Theo, Henri, and Sophie's team placed 9th out of 500 junior teams in the Scholar's Challenge, an exam that tests scholars on the entire curriculum, as well as a silver medal in the Scholar's Bowl. Henri won individual gold medals in Writing, Art, Science, and Special Area, as well as a silver medal in Social Studies. Theo won individual gold medals in Literature, Social Science, and Special Area, and as well as silver medals in Science, History and Art. Sophie won a gold medal in Special Area, and silver medals in Science, History and Art.

More importantly, the team made friends with scholars from all over the world, and represented Canadian values of inclusivity and diversity at the World Scholar's Cup cultural fair. What an amazing experience for our team. Bravo, scholars!
