SHS Debaters nearly sweep championships

Selwyn House debaters took first, second and fourth-place honours among 34 teams at the Quebec Student Debating Association Provincial Championships, held at Vincent Massey Collegiate in Montreal Feb. 15 and 16.
 
The team of Isaac Cape and Jonah Rosen won the Senior Tournament, while the team of Daniel Bergevin and Dylan Lee took second place, and the team of Matthew Homa and Sasha Klein took fourth place. 
 
SHS debaters also took five out of the top 10 speaker awards. Isaac Cape was second, Dylan Lee third, Sasha Klein fourth, Daniel Bergevin sixth and Matthew Homa ninth.
 
The debate topic for the Prepared Junior Round was: “This house supports proportional representation in elections.” For the Prepared Senior Round, the topic was: “This house regrets the impact of the Unites States on the political culture of Canada.” 
 
Topics in the impromptu rounds included: whether multinational companies should be liable for human rights abuses that occur anywhere in their supply chain, whether young educated people in western countries should focus their charitable efforts in their own countries rather than in the developing world, whether developing countries should be paid to not exploit natural resources in environmentally sensitive areas, whether environmental movements should support climate engineering that fundamentally alters the environment in an attempt to combat global warming, whether Olympic athletes should be allowed to take performance-enhancing drugs, whether Olympic athletes should be allowed to publically express their political opinions, whether parents should teach their daughters to devalue romantic relationships, and whether romantic love should be the primary fulfilment in a person’s life.
