COVID-19 Update from SHS Board of Directors - March 22, 2020

March 22, 2020

Dear Selwyn House Community:

The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve at a very quick pace. During its daily update on Sunday, the Quebec government announced that all schools will remain closed until May 1st. Ministry exams have been cancelled.

The Board of Directors and senior management of Selwyn House were already planning for the
eventuality of a longer school closure.

The Board has established a Strategic Planning Committee to work with Hal and senior leadership of the school, on Selwyn’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Our decisions will continue to be informed by our faculty’s experience, the Quebec Ministry of Education and the QAIS, while also remaining focused on best practices for boys and the guiding principles of Veritas.

The Committee and faculty are currently reviewing senior management’s longer-term teaching plan. It will ensure our boys will be able to finish the academic year remotely if necessary. With their feedback, the plan will be communicated to all parents on Wednesday, March 25. It will be both structured and flexible, incorporating a component of online social interaction. Until then, the boys will stay connected with their teachers, and will continue to use their best efforts to produce work that is required of them.

Selwyn House has already taken the necessary steps to support a healthy e-learning curriculum. Faculty members are currently adapting their teaching for online learning, specifically with respect to boys’ education. Last week, students interacted with teachers on various platforms such as Google Classroom and Seesaw, among others.

Thank you all for your support and understanding, as well as your belief and commitment in the Selwyn House experience. We know you are coping with new daily challenges, and hope you are all staying healthy. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Sincerely,

Mike Avedesian ‘88
Chair, Board of Directors
