Fishing Derby under way in Verdun

Coach Marty Boyle reminds everyone that the Selwyn House Fishing Club is up and running again, meeting every Wednesday (Grade 7-11) and Thursday(Grade 4-5-6) nights from 5 to 7 p.m. “on the shores of the mighty St Lawrence River,” only 10 minutes from downtown Montreal in Marty’s hometown, “the beautiful city of Verdun.”

 

“We kicked off our Fishing Club meetings last Wednesday and Thursday, and over the two nights we had approximately 30 students, parents, Old Boys, and teachers,” says Mr. Boyle. “We caught approximately 20 bass, and all were released to fight another day. The boys had a great time fishing and discovering nature, the parents were pleased to get out of the house and discover the outdoors right in the heart of the city. We can't wait for next week.”

 

The derby is open to boys in Grades 4, 5 and 6, along with a parent, who must fish or stay with their son at all times, as there are not enough organizers to fish with the boys, but they will be there to help out with any questions and to show you good spots to fish.

 

The location is the corner of rue Leclair and blvd. LaSalle, in the west section of Verdun, just past the Douglas Hospital.

Mr. Boyle says all that is needed is a good fishing rod and reel. “For tackle, I prefer using Mepps spinners, size 3 and 4, as well as rapalas and jigs, but you can also use worms. Anyone over the age of 16 needs a Quebec fishing license. All these things can be purchased at Canadian Tire.”
