SHS students celebrate the Lunar New Year

Four Chinese students from Grade 10 at Selwyn House have prepared a video to remind everyone in the school community of the significance of the Lunar New Year and the customs associated with the holiday.

Ray (Zhencheng) Qiu, Heyang Xu, Victor Deng and Kevin (Jiayuan) Hu contributed to the video.

This year, the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is celebrated on Friday February 12. This year will be the Year of the Ox. The tradition of naming of years for animals is explained in the video, as is the custom of wearing red on this day as a symbol of long life.

This is the second year in which Chinese students at Selwyn House have created a presentation about the Chinese New Year for their fellow students and teachers. As organizer Ray (Zhencheng) Qiu explains, this activity not only builds bridges between cultures, but helps Chinese students living in Canada to feel connected their homeland.
