Sam Barmish makes Team Canada

Selwyn House Old Boy Sam Barmish '14 is one of 15 wrestlers chosen to represent Canada at the Senior World Wrestling Championships, scheduled for October 2–10, in Oslo, Norway. The selection announcement comes as a result of World Team Trials held in Saskatoon on September 4.

Sam earns this honour only months after winning bronze in the 79-kg weight class at the 2021 Pan American Championships, held in Guatemala this past May. As a result, Sam is currently ranked Ranked 14th in the world in his weight class.

The 79-kg class is “the toughest weight class in the world,” Sam says. His competitors in this class are some of the best wrestlers in the world.

“That class is loaded with superstars,” says Sam. “This will be a good opportunity to test myself.”

He expresses his gratitude for the help he has received over the years from members of the Selwyn House community, especially his private sponsor, Selwyn House Alumni Parent and Path Forward Campaign Co-chair Mark Smith, who Sam describes as “a huge help in my career.”

Sam, who is currently studying economics at Concordia, can often be found doing substitute teaching at Selwyn House. “I’ve come full circle,” he says. “This is as good as it gets. I do it because someone did it for me.”
