Students welcome Armel Omatoko as part of Black History Month

On Thursday, February 16, Selwyn House welcomed Armel Omatoko as part of the school’s celebration of Black History Month.

Mr. Omatoko is the founder of Uplift514, a dance studio located in Montreal. He was named a Black Changemaker by the CBC in 2021.

Mr. Omatoko spoke to students in Middle and Senior schools, as well as Grade 5 and 6 students. His interactive presentation focused on the influence of dancing in his culture, specifically in the Congo and the Ivory Coast. He also engaged in a dialogue with the students about being a cultural ambassador, the importance of gaining a deeper understanding of Black cultural figures and of spreading correct information online.
