Selwyn Fencing Team Takes on Inaugural Regional Championship
On March 17, the Selwyn fencing team competed in the inaugural GMAA Regional Fencing Championship. Congratulations to the 11 Senior School students and 2 Middle School students who put their swordsmanship, patience, and physical wit to the test. Many students won medals including Max B. who claimed the Championship title and gold medal in the Juvenile Division. Read more about the students individual performances on our website.
Grade 7 student Sean K. delivered a thrilling performance in the opening round of the playoffs. After dropping his first bout 5–3, he rebounded strongly to win the next two bouts 5–1 and 5–4, securing a place in the semifinals. Sean ultimately fell to Selwyn’s Haiyuan W. and finished the tournament with a bronze medal in the Bantam division.
Grade 8 student Haiyuan W. posted an impressive 4–1 record in the round robin and earned a bye to the semifinals, which he won 2–0. Haiyan advanced to the finals but was defeated by the eventual champion, earning a well-deserved silver medal in the Bantam division.
Grade 11 student Clement Ma finished the round robin with a 4–3 record. He went on to win his opening playoff match before narrowly losing 2–1 to Selwyn’s Max B., securing a bronze medal in the Juvenile division.
Grade 11 student Max B. had a dominant showing, going 6–1 in the round robin and earning a bye to the semifinals, which he won 2–1. In the finals, Max dropped the opening bout 5–4 but responded with unshaken resolve, winning the next two bouts 5–2 and 5–3 to claim the championship title and gold medal in the Juvenile division.
