Nine Students Complete the ALONE Wilderness Expedition

In late April, a group of nine Grade 11 students enrolled in the ALONE Outdoor Education option class completed their final trip — a five-day wilderness expedition centred on one defining challenge: solitude.

Throughout the year, students dedicated themselves to acquiring a range of essential wilderness skills, including fire-making, food preservation techniques, and comprehensive wilderness first aid. Their commitment to the program was recognized through the certification in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) offered through Boreal River Rescue. Students also spent three full days in Kahnawake earlier in the year under the expert guidance of Shakohahiiostha McComber (owner and teacher with Iontionhnhehkwen Wilderness Skills) to refine their fire, shelter and animal tracking skills prior to the expedition.

Students put this knowledge to the test as they faced the demands of living on the land - with snow still on the ground. They drew on what they had learned to navigate each day with confidence and self-reliance. Students worked to build patience, resilience, and a deeper understanding of both the environment and themselves.

Congratulations to the nine students who rose to this challenge. We are proud of your dedication throughout this course. - Mr. Geisterfer, Outdoor Education Program Coordinator
