Class of 2008 inducted into Old Boys’ Association

Even though they are months away from graduation, members of the Class of 2008 have already learned what it’s like to be Old Boys.

Even though they are months away from graduation, members of the Class of 2008 have already learned what it’s like to be Old Boys.

On the evening of October 4, they became the first class to be inducted into the school’s alumni organization so early in their final year. Sixty-five Grade 11 students attended a dinner in Coristine Hall, where they were joined by directors of the Old Boys’ Association and faculty members.

In addition to being introduced to the benefits and responsibilities of being a member of this exclusive organization, each member of the Class of 2008 was given a chance to chat over dinner with an Old Boy who works in a profession that the student is personally interested in.

After an introduction by Headmaster Will Mitchell, and a welcome by Old Boys’ Association President Paul Mayer ’74, OBA Past-President Fil Papich ’77 went into greater detail about how Old Boys can—and should—stay involved with the school after they graduate.

Matthew Beckerleg ’94, an Old Boys’ Association director, gave a younger graduate’s perspective on the purpose of the Old Boys’ Association, and how the network of Selwyn House graduates helped him get started in his professional life.

Senior School Director Shawn O’Donnell then led the induction ceremony, in which each member of the Grade 11 class came to the stage and shook hands with the OBA Directors and were welcomed into the Association.

Each member of the class signed his name to a school flag that will be hung in the Macaulay gym.

Fil Papich ’77 read the names of the boys who have volunteered to serve as Class Representatives, to act as a liaison between the OBA and the graduates of 2008. They are: Evren Boisjolie, Anthony Depatie, Thomas Nichols, Vinay Desai, David Stein, David McLeod, Denis Smirnoff and Graham Hooton.

As a finale, OBA Director Tom Konigsthal ’74 showed a slideshow he had prepared on what it means to be an Old Boy.
