Six Selwyn House Old Boys returned to Selwyn House via Zoom on Nov. 10 for Career Day 2020. They were joined by Selwyn House Counsellor Carissa Springer, Selwyn House parent and board member Lloyd Feldman, and AHL coach David Urquhart.
Old Boys met with Grade 11 students to discuss their respective career paths and offer advice on getting started in the professional world. Taking part were: Dr. Tarek Razek '84, Fernand Le Fevre 2011, Charles Vennat 2005, Tim Fleiszer '92, Sean Tepper 2008 and Marc Vinh '88.
Dr. Tarek Razek is a general surgeon and Chief of Trauma at McGill University Health Centre. In addition to being a renowned surgeon, as Chief of Trauma, he is in charge of managing all emergency medical surgery.
Fernand Le Fevre discussed his career in consulting. In his role at Teneo, he advises CEOs of some of the top companies in the world in areas like crisis management and reputation building.
Charles Vennat (Former President of Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association) is one of the youngest CEOs of a publicly traded company in Canada. He talked about the excitement and challenges associated with building a brand in a new, highly regulated industry. He will also discuss the calculated risks he took that allowed him to be leading his third company at such a young age.
Tim Fleiszer is a four-time time Grey Cup Champion who spent nine years in the CFL. Following his playing career, he worked in the field of sports management and currently is director of Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada.
Sean Tepper has wide-ranging experience as a journalist, from writing Toronto Raptors game previews to serving as a news reporter for the Globe and Mail. He now is supervising editor at theScore, where he manages eSports and Video Game content.
Marc Vinh (a Selwyn House parent), is Chief Economist for CN Railways. It is his job to monitor global economic trends and risk factors that will help guide the company’s decisions. Previously he served as Global Director of Operations for McDonald's, where he helped open new franchises around the world.
Ms. Carissa Springer has had a long career as a counsellor, psychotherapist, and social worker, and is currently the Selwyn House school counsellor. She spent more than 10 years helping veterans and their families through Canada's Veterans Affairs.
