Middle and Senior School Celebrate Founder’s Day at Special Assembly

On Thursday, November 27, Middle and Senior School gathered in Coristine Hall for the annual Founder’s Day Assembly, honouring 117 years of Selwyn House and this year’s theme of Family.
Headmaster Mike Downey reflected on how generations of families, staff, and alumni have shaped Selwyn House into a close-knit community. Student speakers Eli R., Spencer R., and Max A. shared stories highlighting the traditions and relationships that make the school feel like a second home. A video montage celebrated the families who contribute to school life, past and present.

The assembly recognized exceptional dedication within the community. Firstly, Danping Shi received the Nancy Pitfield Award for outstanding parent volunteerism. Afterwards, the room took a moment to celebrate Mr. Tom Downey for his achievement of receiving the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence. Celebrations were also in order for Senior School English teacher Ms. Liana Palko who was honoured with the 25 Years of Service Award. Mr. Downey also announced this year’s Speirs Medalist, Mike Avedesian ’88, for his lasting impact as an Old Boy, parent, and SHA Board member.

The assembly closed with the school hymn, uniting the Middle and Senior School community in celebrating the people and values that have shaped Selwyn House for over a century.
