Pre-U Canadian Literature Class Presents Original Play: "The Man"
The Man. A play completely written, directed, produced, and performed by the Pre-U Canadian literature class. We took heavy inspiration from the play 7 Stories by the famous Canadian playwright Morris Panych, which we had read together in class. As did Panych, we also make use of absurdism and meta-theater.
Absurdism is an ideology that says that the search for meaning is directly in conflict with the universe's lack of meaning, but that despite this, one should still embrace the absurdity of life and all that it has to offer. Meta-theater is the practice of characters being self-referential, breaking the fourth wall, if you will. I challenge you to spot metatheatrical moments in the play. 7 Stories explores the search for meaning in a chaotic world. The Can Lit group takes inspiration from this idea, and also incorporates the thread of being deeply misunderstood, while craving connection.
I would like to thank Mr. Séguin, Ms. Davis, Ms. Martin, and Mr. Banerjee for their continued help and support. And thanks to those who took time in the middle of their day to attend the matinee. There is meaning and connection in that.
It was such a joy to bear witness to their process and immense creativity. -Ms. Sweer, Pre-U English & Social Sciences teacher
