Hal Hannaford chosen as new headmaster
Mr. Hannaford, headmaster of Royal St. George’s College in Toronto, and past headmaster of Kingsway College School, will succeed Will Mitchell, effective January 1, 2009.
Ted Claxton, Chairman of the Selwyn House Association Board of Directors, has issued the following letter of announcement.

To the Community of Selwyn House School,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Hal Hannaford as the eighth Head of Selwyn House School, effective January 1, 2009.
Mr. Hannaford joins us from Royal St. George’s College (Grades 3-12) in Toronto where he has been Head of School for the past eleven years. Previously, he was the founding Headmaster of Kingsway College School (Grades 1-8) from 1989 to 1996.
Under his leadership, Royal St George’s College, one of the country’s premier independent schools for boys, with an enrolment of 440 students, has significantly enhanced its academic standards with 85 per cent of its graduating class receiving Ontario Scholar Certificates. Keys to its success have been the recruitment of first-rate administrators and faculty and the strengthening of the school’s financial position. During his tenure Royal St George’s College has benefited from an $8-million capital program, and Annual Giving has grown from $90,000 to $600,000.
In addition to his experience and his impressive track record, some of the principal attributes that Mr. Hannaford brings to Selwyn House include:
- A deep commitment to boys’ education and to the principles underlying Selwyn House’s existing mission and values;
- A sensitivity to Quebec and a commitment not only to enhancing our French-language programs but to graduating students who are both bilingual and bicultural;
- A proven capacity to attract and retain the best faculty;
- Strong communications skills; and
- Management experience.
Mr. Hannaford, a graduate from Lower Canada College, and his wife, Susan, are both native Montrealers. Mr. Hannaford has a MBA from INSEAD, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University and previously attended Queen’s University.
We are confident that Mr. Hannaford has the vision and the leadership skills to ensure that Selwyn House continues to be an outstanding school and is well positioned to meet the challenges ahead.
As indicated above, Mr. Hannaford will not be starting until January 2009. We are pleased and indeed grateful that William Mitchell has agreed to stay on as Head until then.
Please join me in welcoming Hal and Susan in their return home to Montreal and in welcoming the Hannafords and their children, Alisse and Reid, into the Selwyn House Community.

Au nom du conseil d'administration, j'ai le plaisir de vous annoncer la nomination de M. Hal Hannaford qui deviendra le 1er janvier 2009 le 8e directeur de l'école Selwyn House.
M. Hannaford a occupé durant les 11 dernières années le poste de directeur du Royal St. George’s College (classes 3-12) de Toronto. Auparavant, il a été le premier directeur du Kingsway College School (classes 1-8) de 1989 à 1996.
Sous sa direction, le Royal St George's College, l'un des plus importants établissements d'enseignement privé pour garçons du Canada, comptant 440 élèves, a amélioré de façon significative ses résultats scolaires, 85% de ses diplômés recevant le Certificat du Mérite scolaire de l’Ontario. Les raisons de ce succès proviennent du recrutement d'administrateurs et d'enseignants de premier ordre et de la consolidation de la situation financière de l'école. Au cours de son mandat, le Royal St George's College a bénéficié d'un programme en capital de 8 millions de dollars et les dons annuels sont passés de 90 000 $ à 600 000 $.
En plus de son expérience et de ses résultats impressionnants, M. Hannaford apportera à l'école Selwyn House les atouts suivants:
- son profond engagement quant à l'éducation des garçons et son adhésion aux principes qui sous-tendent la mission et les valeurs de l'école Selwyn House;
- sa compréhension du Québec et sa volonté à non seulement renforcer nos programmes d'apprentissage du français mais aussi à porter une attention particulière à la formation d'élèves bilingues avec de fortes connaisances des deux cultures;
- sa capacité éprouvée à attirer les meilleurs professeurs et à les retenir;
- ses grandes qualités de communicateur; et
- son expérience en tant que directeur.
M. Hannaford et son épouse Susan sont tout deux nés à Montréal et M. Hannaford est diplômé du Lower Canada College. M. Hannaford possède une maîtrise en administration de l'INSEAD, un baccalauréat en éducation de l'Université de Toronto et un baccalauréat en commerce de l'université Concordia. Il a également étudié à l'Université Queen's.
Nous croyons sincèrement que M. Hannaford possède la vision et les qualités de leadership qui permettront à l'école Selwyn House de continuer à être une école extraordinaire et de relever les défis qui l'attendent au cours des prochaines années.
Comme je l'ai indiqué plus haut, M. Hannaford n'entrera en fonction qu'en janvier 2009. M. William Mitchell a accepté de garder son poste de directeur jusqu'à cette date et nous l'en remercions chaleureusement.
Je vous demande de vous joindre à moi pour accueillir Hal et Susan à leur retour à Montréal afin de leur souhaiter la bienvenue à eux et à leurs enfants Alisse et Reid au sein de la grande famille de l'école Selwyn House.
