On February 16, in perfect timing with the renewed excitement for curling brought on by the winter Olympics, the Selwyn House curling team brought home the gold.
In a very close and intense GMAA championship match against Royal West, hosted by Selwyn House at the Royal Montreal Curling Club, the Selwyn players managed to stay focused and show off their skills to the hopeful audience. After three years of training and competition, the players finally got the reward they had long hoped for. And, with the team being largely composed of Grade 11 students, this “last-chance”
championship match was particularly meaningful.
Both Selwyn House teams played very well. Congratulations to both Team A (Skip Nicholas Backman, Michael Forian, Harry Cape, Chris Sarlos and Marcos Archambault) and Team B (Skip Nicholas Mathé, Liam Kenny, Lawrence Day and Anthony Matte).
Our headmaster, Mr. Hannaford, coaches, teachers, parents, and observing students alike sat on the edge of their seats as the two eight-end games placed Selwyn House and Royal West at a tie. A very close, dramatic shoot-out ensued, with Liam Kenny’s final “on-the-button” shot securing the victory for the Gryphons.
Coaches Marie-Eve Theriault and Rob Philion are very proud of their team.
