There are more puppy mills in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada. There, animals are raised under horribly inhumane conditions for sale on the Internet or to pet stores. Males—or females too old to breed—are often killed or left to die.
Ninety per cent of puppies sold in pet stores in Quebec come from puppy mills. “These facilities exist because of public demand,” points out Selwyn House French Teacher Nancy Allard-Coutu.
Students enrolled in Working with HSI/Canada want to help stop the vicious cycle.
“In Middle School we have interest courses on Thursday afternoons,” Ms. Allard-Coutu explains. I offered a workshop on working with Humane Society International Canada, and nine boys signed up. I told them about puppy mills and things began to roll from there. It was mostly student-led. They came up with the name ‘Selwyn House School Dog Defenders’ and organized a bake sale, a popcorn sale and an awareness campaign.”
The “DD Boys” showed a Humane Society video of dogs being rescued from a puppy mill in Quebec, reminding their audience that if they would like to help the situation they could “Opt to adopt.”
The Middle School conducted an awareness campaign with pledge sheets in order to spread the message of the cruelty of puppy mills and to raise money for the Humane Society a toonie at a time.
In the beginning of the campaign their goal was to raise $1,000, but by April 23 they had already raised more than $4,127. They announced a “toonie jar” fundraiser during Senior School lunch, which that will wrap up the campaign.
