A poster drawn by Selwyn House Grade 6 student Demetrios Adamakakis was chosen by Immunize Canada to represent Quebec on a calendar to promote immunization.

Entitled “Vaccines Save Lives,” Demetrios’ poster shows two young people, one who has been immunized and one who has not. The drawing shows a microscope view of the young people’s cells, showing how the vaccine fights against infection.

Demetrios heard about the contest from his teacher, Michelle Kocsis, and decided to apply his interest in art to the competition.
Winners were chosen from each province to complete the poster calendar.

In December, Demetrios travelled to Ottawa with his mother, father and sister to attend the medical conference where the winners were announced. His mother, Dr. Anna Maria Derosis, a surgeon at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital, helped her son feel comfortable in the presence of so many doctors.

“My whole family gave me a lot of support,” Demetrios says.

Immunize Canada (formerly the Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness & Promotion) is a coalition of national non-governmental, professional, health, consumer, government and private sector organizations with a specific interest in promoting the understanding and use of vaccines recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.
