117th Founder’s Day Celebrates Family

Selwyn House School gathered on November 27 to celebrate Founder’s Day, honouring 117 years of tradition, and the Veritas values that continue to shape our community.

The evening brought together parents, alumni, staff, former Headmasters, and special guests as we recognized individuals whose dedication has strengthened our school in meaningful ways.

Headmaster Mike Downey opened the celebration by reflecting on this year’s theme, “family,” and highlighting the generations of commitment that have helped Selwyn House grow from a small school in 1908 to a vibrant campus of more than 600 students today.

The Old Boys’ Association President Brad White '94 welcomed three new Honorary Old Boys: Ms. Sharon Walker, recognized for two decades of outstanding service to the school and the Association Board; Ms. Courtney Prieur, honoured for her leadership in student life and experiential learning; and the late Mr. Roger Nincheri, a beloved teacher of over 20 years.

We also celebrated Ms. Liana Palko, acknowledged for 25 years of dedicated teaching and leadership in the Senior English Department.

We also took a moment to acknowledge Mr. Tom Downey for receiving the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. A short video was shared, celebrating his exceptional impact in the classroom.

The Nancy Pitfield Volunteer Award was presented to Danping Shi in gratitude for her extraordinary service to the community. Danping has directed this year’s accompanying $5,000 donation from the Pitfield Family towards advancing academic development in the areas of science and innovation.

The evening concluded with SHA Board Chair Mr. Tom Pitfield '93 introducing this year’s Speirs Medal recipient, Mr. Mike Avedesian ’88. Honoured as a devoted volunteer, past Board Chair, and proud parent to three Old Boys, Luke '18, Matti '20, and Bobby '24, Pre-U '25. His leadership and generosity have left a lasting impact on the school’s entire community.

Founder’s Day remains a cherished reminder of the people, past and present, who embody the heart of Selwyn House. We extend our deepest congratulations to all honourees and our sincere appreciation to the staff and volunteers who made the evening meaningful.
