November was Children’s Grief Awareness Month, a time to recognize that many young people carry grief in both visible and invisible ways; whether from the death of a loved one, family changes, shifts in friendships or other significant losses. This year, Ms. Springer, with the support of Ms. Brianna, our school counsellors, facilitated age-appropriate activities across every level of the school. Students were given safe and supportive spaces to explore what grief means, reflect on their own experiences, and learn how to show compassion for others. These reflections came together in our Children’s Grief Awareness Month Mural, filled with blue hearts; some created in memory of loved ones like family members or pets, others expressing encouragement, empathy and care for our Selwyn family.
One of the most powerful moments occurred during the Senior School assembly on November 19, when Owen Azoulay '25, Pre-U '26 , Xavier N. 25, Pre-U '26 and Eli R. in Grade 11 courageously shared personal pieces about their own experiences of loss, reminding us that even when grief feels isolating, we are never alone.
Thank you , Ms. Springer & Ms. Brianna, for guiding our students with such thoughtfulness & care, and to every student and staff member who approached this month with compassion, courage, and open hearts.
