Torrey Mitchell 2002, the only Selwyn House Old Boy to play in the NHL, visited Selwyn House on May 9 to answer questions posed by Grade 9 students.
Torrey has played 10 years in the NHL, and has one more year left on his contract with Montreal. He has had many injuries over the years, but assures his fans he feels “100 per cent” headed into season 11.
He scored 11 goals in his best season so far. His ambition? A 12-goal season.
Torrey says playing in Montreal has been the high point of his career so far. Settled here with a wife and two children, he would love to stay in his hometown forever. If he does get traded, he hopes it will be to someplace warm.
But what Grade 9 students really want to know about is:
PK Subban: “An energetic guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, I’m very happy for him.”
Fighting in hockey: “It’s never personal.”
His most nerve-wracking moment: His fourth NHL game, taking his first face-off against Joe Sakic, his lifelong hero.
Favourite teacher while at Selwyn House: Pat Shannon
Prep school experience: “If I hadn’t gone to Selwyn House, I don’t think I would have survived at Hotchkiss.”
