The OBA Hockey Tournament is back

The OBA Nicoll-Mitchell Hockey Tournament returned in full force on December 19, 2025, marking a long-awaited and much-celebrated comeback. A last-minute power outage forced the cancellation of the 2023 event, while a change of venue and low registration led to the tournament not taking place in 2024. It was especially rewarding to see the tournament back on the ice and thriving once again.

This year’s event welcomed over 50 Old Boys, allowing us to fully field five teams and deliver a full day of fast-paced, high-energy hockey. The pace of play, competitive spirit, and camaraderie on display throughout the day were clear reminders of why this tournament holds such a special place in the OBA calendar.

The day began with a ceremonial puck drop prior to the first game, performed by Steve Mitchell alongside Sharon Cozens, Selwyn House’s retiring Director of Advancement, who will be concluding her role at the end of the month. Following the conclusion of play, Mike Downey, Headmaster, and Mike Maurovich, Director of Athletics, shared updates on where Selwyn House stands today and our school’s vision for continued growth, particularly within athletics and the hockey program. Brad White ‘94, President of the OBA, welcomed everyone and expressed his appreciation for the strong turnout and renewed momentum of the tournament before turning the floor over to Steve Mitchell, former Director of Athletics at Selwyn House and co-namesake of the Nicoll-Mitchell Tournament.

In a meaningful and heartfelt moment, Steve Mitchell took the opportunity to honour his longtime coaching partner, Tom Nicoll, recognizing more than 25 years of shared dedication coaching Gryphons in both hockey and football. His tribute highlighted Tom’s lasting impact on generations of Selwyn athletes and the values of teamwork, commitment, and character that continue to define the Selwyn House athletic tradition.

The evening concluded with a reception and a series of prizes and awards, with Team Red taking top honours. More importantly, the tournament’s successful return reaffirmed the strength of the Selwyn House Old Boys community and the enduring legacy of the Nicoll-Mitchell Hockey Tournament, setting a strong foundation for its continued growth in the years ahead.
