Debaters make finals at Queen’s

For the first time in Selwyn House debating history, the Senior Gryphons made it into the finals at the Queen’s University High School Debating Tournament in Kingston, Ontario.

From 106 teams entered from more than 50 schools at the tournament, Félix St-Onge Tavchandjian and Gabriel Trottenberg made it into the playoffs in 10th of 16 places, and proceeded to handily win the octo, quarter, and semifinal matches. In the end, it took two members of the Canadian World Debate Team to finally take them down.

This is the first time a Selwyn Team has ever made it to the playoff rounds, and the first time in 10 years that a Quebec team has been in the final.

Felix and Gabriel now qualify for the Cambridge School Championship in England.

In addition, Isaac Cape and Jonah Rosen finished fourth in the Junior Division, and Isaac was third-place Junior Speaker. They qualify for the International Competition of Young Debaters in Oxford, England
