Debaters sweep QC championships

For the second year in a row, Selwyn House debaters won both the Junior and Senior divisions at the Quebec Debating Championships, which were held over the February 17-18 weekend at LCC.

All of the best debaters in the province were competing for qualifying spots at the National tournaments that will be held later in the spring.

The team of Isaac Cape and Jonah Rosen won the Junior Championship, with Isaac being named Best Speaker. Felix St. Onge Tavchandjian and Gabriel Trottenberg won the Senior Championship, with Gabriel earning Second Place Speaker honours and qualifying to try out for the Canada World Schools Debate Team.

All the Selwyn House Teams qualified for their respective national tournaments. Josh Cohen and Gabriel Di Bert (4th place) will join Felix and Gabriel for the Senior National Debate Championships in St. John's, Newfoundland this April. The team of Dylan Lee and Daniel Bergevin (6th place), and the team of Jacob Deegan and Nahshon Da Silva (4th place) will join Isaac and Jonah in for the Junior National Debate Tournament in Calgary this May.

Matthew Homa (Grade 8) put in a remarkable performance, having been put into the tournament at the last minute with a debater from another school.
