CNIB - Phone It Forward

Donate a smartphone. Change the life of someone who's blind!  Modern smartphones allow users who are blind to:
  • Read prescription labels and take medication safely
  • Recognize the faces of loved ones
  • Access emergency assistance from sighted volunteers
  • Travel safely alone using GPS
  • And do hundreds of other day-to-day tasks most of us take for granted
Drop-off boxes will be located at Reception and in the Macaulay Mezzanine (Ms. Wong's Office).  Questions can be directed to Ms. Courtney Prieur.
Here’s how it works:
1. You donate your used smartphone. CNIB will happily accept any modern smartphone.
2. They will wipe and refurbish your phone. If your phone is modern enough to be accessible to a user who is blind, they will fix it up and outfit it with a suite of accessible apps. Otherwise, it will be sold and the proceeds will be put towards the cost of a refurbished smartphone for a user who is blind.
3. CNIB will give it to a person with sight loss who needs it. Once your phone is refurbished, CNIB will give it to a Canadian with sight loss who is waiting for one. CNIB will also give them one-on-one training on how to use it.

CNIB Phone it Forward Smartphone Prepare your Phone for Donation

In order to protect your data and ensure the phone is usable for the program and ensure the highest tax receipt possible, there are some important steps required prior to donating your phone.

Back up your Data
We suggest you save a copy of your photos, contacts and other important content currently on your phone to your computer or online storage to ensure you don’t lose anything valuable.

Remove iCloud Lock/Google Lock/Blackberry ID
In order for us to use your phone for this program, we need to have full access to all its functionality which we can’t do if these locks are active.
Please note, if Donated Devices are locked when received, they will be unusable to the program and may, therefore, have a $0 value and not qualify for a tax receipt. Removal is quick and simple and we have provided additional information to help you (separate attachment).

Remove your SIM Card
Your SIM card is the tiny plastic chip that goes inside your smartphone to connect it to the network. It’s yours, we don’t need it for the donation purposes. If it is not removed, we will simply destroy it upon receipt.
Removal is quick and simple but if you need additional help we have provided additional information for you (separate attachment).

Remove your SD Card
If you have an Android or Blackberry device there may be an SD card inside. This is an extra memory card which would contain personal data and information so you will want to keep it. Apple devices do not use SD cards.
Removal is quick and simple but if you need additional help we have provided additional information for you (separate attachment).

Factory Reset (Wipe) your Device
This means your device will be reset to its original form. All the content that you have added will be removed, so there will be nothing personal on it when you send it for donation.
Wiping is quick and simple but if you need additional help we have provided additional information for you (separate attachment).

Remove all Cases, Accessories and Cables
Screen Protectors can be left in place
