A band and choir of musicians from Selwyn House and ECS won silver plaques in both the choir and jazz band competitions at the Boston Heritage Festival, which took place March 28-31.
All told, 29 girls and 16 boys from ECS and Selwyn House participated in masterclass workshops at the famous Berklee College of Music given by veteran professors of the college’s jazz program and choral programs respectively. Both groups then went on to perform at Boston’s Heritage Music Festival, competing against musical groups from schools across the USA. The SHS/ECS choir and jazz band each earned a second-place silver award in their separate categories.
“The purpose of the trip to Boston was to help develop our combined jazz bands and mixed choir for performances at our own schools’ year-end concerts in May,” explains SHS Music Director Alex Becker. The Selwyn House concert will be on May 1 at 7 p.m.
“Congratulations to all participating students for their hard work, dedication, and talents!” says Mr. Becker.
Beginning in 1980, approximately 100 Heritage Festivals are currently held each year in locations throughout the United States, with middle school and high school-aged bands, choirs and orchestras being judged on a national standard.
