A Selwyn House Legend Announces Her Retirement

This past Tuesday and Wednesday, as many of you may have heard, it was announced to the Middle and Senior School boys, respectively, that our beloved Ms. Carol Manning has made the decision to retire at the end of the current school year. I don't have to tell you how careful Ms. Manning is with her planning, and she has decided that, after 38 years at Selwyn House and 42 years in education, the time is right.

If one wants to articulate a definition of professionalism, caring, diligence, hard work, passion, unwavering commitment, optimism, and energy, then you need to look no further than the Selwyn House Head of Middle School. Our guarantee is that each boy will be Known & Loved, and I can promise you, despite the fact that 13- and 14-year-old boys can test that guarantee to the utmost, over the past number of decades no one has demonstrated this more than Carol Manning. She knows and loves all of her students. We owe Carol a great deal.

From a personal point of view, she has taught me so much over the 11 years that I have had the opportunity of working closely with her, and I would like to express my personal admiration and thanks for all she has done.

In true Carol Manning style, she informed Mike Downey of her decision a number of weeks ago, and Mr. Downey respected her desire to keep this totally quiet until now. He has already given much thought as to her potential replacement, a clear process has begun, and we all look forward to the announcement of the new Head of Middle School in the final term.

In the meantime, I hope you will all celebrate the wonderful legacy that Carol Manning has created. You would have to look far and wide to find a more dedicated and accomplished educator.

Congratulations, Carol. The entire Selwyn House community joins you in celebrating your spectacular career.

Hal Hannaford, Headmaster
